Opeth: Heritage Cover Art Revealed

Share

I kinda thought I was being trolled when I saw the cover art for Opeth’s upcoming album, Heritage, on Metal Storm this morning. I checked their sources (which happened to be the official Opeth site) and sure enough, this will be the album’s cover, designed by long time Opeth friend and artist Travis Smith:

I honestly still don’t know what to think about it. I like some of it, or maybe the idea of some of it, but the band member’s faces in the tree makes me cringe a little. I know the ‘Peth worships 70’s prog-rock and all it’s trappings but I was kind of expecting, hoping for even, another dark and smoky cover ala Ghost Reveries or Still Life, not something that would be at home wrapped around a Monument record. I suppose this new one has its charms too and change is nice. What do you think?

Heritage will be released on September 20th through Roadrunner Records.

Interesting. I heard someone say the number of skulls was the number of ex-opeth members and then you got their keyboardist falling off the tree (he worked on this album but has sine left the band). I like the symbolism. It's a good change, me thinks. I just hope this record brings the death metal!
