I Wish I Were in Helsinki || Metaltown Festival Dates and Line Up

Remember this segment?  This is where I bitch about not living close to shows I want to see.  Right now I'm bummed I cannot go to Sweden's Metaltown festival, recently confirming heavy hitters like Amon Amarth, Between the Buried and Me, In Flames and Dark Tranquillity. This year's Metaltown festival is set to take place in Gothenburg on June 18-19. The list of bands that will play is ever expanding, but you can see the names of those currently confirmed here or here.

Things Go Badly at Colombia Metallica Concert Last Night

Last night Metallica played a concert in Colombia for the first time in eleven years and things went down pretty much as you would expect. Between 20,000 to 70,000 fans, 1,500 police, 50 arrests, 4 tanks, 3 stabbings and an injured po-po/ partridge in pear tree. Apparently before the show some sadistic ass-hats on facebook were inciting non-ticketed fans to crash the concert. And you know what those sheeple did? They crashed the concert. There is no word whether the show went on or not, but I assuming it did as I think we would be hearing a very different and much more catastrophic report if it hadn’t. In other news: Metallica is loving every minute of the press and the subsequent ‘killing’ they probably made last night on their over packed and over priced show.

After a Long Day...| High on Fire-Frost Hammer Video

We've had a pretty good response to our contest this month but it still is anyone's game.  Today was rather uneventful, but we did get you caught up on some news of dire importance and showed the Opeth fanboys a new band if they're feeling let down.

After a long day of that, how about a new video from the High on Fire camp.  Released today, this video for the track ‘Frost Hammer’ is pretty sweet.  In it are swords and wizards and according to the band, depicts “the epic tale of a warrior’s sojourn to the cold and barren Plateau of Leng where he secures the fabled Frost Hammer that will be used to enact the final rites and complete the dark rebirth and reign of the Frost Child”.  Damn

If You Like That, Try This || Gwynbleidd - Stare Into The Sun

Cover (front)

Opeth has all but given into being just a progressive band and in their wake, some fans are left scratching their heads.  Their recent contribution to the ‘God of War’ soundtrack--one where most bands involved are releasing some of their heavier material (see Trivium)--was lacking... to say the least.

So when the dust gets swept off and artists and fans have gone their ways, where will Opeth lay?  And who will fill the void they left?  In my humble opinion I believe most people who are fans of Opeth (especially the die-hards) will follow that band to the grave, even if it is with less intensity as before.  I think fans looking for early Opeth-ish metal material can find it in Gwynbleidd, a New York band that stormed onto the scene in 2009 with the release of their debut album 'Nostalgia'.  Gwynbleidd has been compared to Opeth up and down.  Truth be told, the reason for this is because.....they really do sound like Opeth.  That is not such a bad thing, especially right now with some fans feeling alienated from them and searching for something new.

So, If you like Opeth, give Gwynbleidd a try.  To say they sound ‘exactly like Opeth’ or that they are ‘rip-offs’ would be a grave injustice to both of the extremely talented groups of musicians.  Similar as they may be, both have their merits.

Dragonforce Is Down a Singer- Dark Tranquillity Is Up an Album

For whatever reason, yesterday Metal Call-Out failed to bring you two important points of news. The first and probably most important would be the release of Dark Tranquility’s album, “We Are the Void”, that I reviewed here.

Secondly, the members of Dragonforce announced yesterday the departure of their singer ZP Theart. In an official statement the band said the following:

"It is with great regret that DragonForce announce a parting of the ways with singer ZP Theart. This is due to insurmountable differences of musical opinion but the rest of the band sincerely wish ZP great success with his future projects.”

Its hard for me, on the outside looking in, to see why a bad as formulaic as Dragonforce would struggle with creative differences. I always imagined rehearsals for them were Herman Li screaming “More epic!!” while crossing swords with the other members who replied “Ho!”. So what could possibly be the "insurmountable differences"? I can only really speculate but I imagine it has to do with one of these three key things; hair, speed, and/or booze. Any how, if you want to audition for the empty spot just follow the directions here to apply.
