I gave a few new albums a spin or two but for the most part stuck with the classics or ventured out to new or forgotten genres. This year, with a fresh outlook after a much-needed break, I’m back on the wagon and ready to go. There’s one or two albums in particular that I’m down-right excited for, a few I’m cautiously optimistic about, and a handful I’m feeling the stirrings of anticipation over.
This year in 2014, we have seen a lot of popular bands add to their collection of releases. Insomnium, Epica, Behemoth, and Judas Priest are some of the major bands this year. Usually it seems like there is one genre that controls the year's releases, but this year it seems we had a good mix of Death, Power, Black and Traditional metal albums.
Amon Amarth, Enslaved and Skeletonwitch came into Metal CallOut's backyard of Salt Lake City, Utah on February 12th at the Murry Theater. We were lucky enough to the catch the show and watch a hell of a performance. The tour was Amon Amarth’s Deceiver of the Gods North American Tour 2014.
What can you say about Amon Amarth shows? They are some of the most epic and entertaining shows from a death metal band that you will see. If you haven’t seen Amon Amarth live, you need to. They always have a great set with a pleasant light show and effects. They get the crowd involved with their songs by chanting and singing. March was a little slow in the heavy metal community for new releases, but never the less there is a hand full of albums that you should check out. Top one on the list is Gojira's 'L'Enfant Sauvage'.
We had some solid releases in the month of May. This month had a little of all types of sub genres in heavy metal. Some of our readers were excited for Agalloch's "The Serpent & The Sphere" and Sabaton – "Heroes".
There was some strong "old school" metal releases in the month of June. We had legendary Judas Priest, some Grave Digger and great thrash metal from Overkill. If that doesn't interest you, there is doom metal from Noverbers Doom or deathcore from Suicide Silence.
An interesting group of heavy metal releases back in August. We had some big players release some strong albums, in Eluveitie and Accept. Fellow folk metalers Alestorm released their 4th studio album, while Opeth released their 11th. Some highly talked about releases from Darkest Hour and The Haunted. Which leaves DragonForce, Emtombed A.D. and HammerFall quietly making an appearance.
There were some really good release last month in October and if you haven't checked some of these out, you need to. There are a even a couple in this list that might make our annual Metal CallOut Best Album of the Year list. Only time will tell. Some of the popular release in the community was probably the high anticipated At The Gates album, followed by Exodus. Some bands that snuck up on me were the new Scar Symmetry and While Heaven Wept.
Yes, we all know and love Slayer, so it's great to hear that they are headed back to the studio to record their 11th studio album. We don't have any details of released date, set list or even an album title. But we have heard rumors of the album set for early 2015.
