Meet Dream Theater’s New Drummer… Mike Mangini
In this whole thing that played out like a fucking reality show, Dream Theater has finally announced a new drummer to replace Mike Portnoy (who’s recent departure also played out like a fucking reality show), the 48-year-old instructor and music theory author Mike Mangini.
Mangini, who’s played with Annihilator, Extreme, James Labrie and Steve Vai, has a pretty impressive resume of drumming accolades under his belt including two books he’s written on his drumming technique, a handful of “Fastest Drummer” records, and a teaching position at the Berkley College of Music. After a pretty ridiculous and overly publicized (which you can watch elsewhere) try-out session against six other incredibly talented musicians, Dream Theater officially offered Mangini the job. Obviously he accepted and here we are.
