Top Ten Death Metal Bands

Share

According to historians, Death Metal first emerged sometime in the mid-to-late 1980’s, a period of time dominated by otherwise terrible music. The likes of Mike & The Mechanics, Rick Astley, Paula Abdul, and Mili Vanili were taking sonic craps all over the airwaves and the only beacon of light was the thriving thrash scene (and Night Ranger). Copulated in this thrash scene’s loin with the seeds of the likes of Slayer, Venom, Celtic Frost and others- death metal was gestated and born.

So here, I present you with my list of the top ten death metal bands based on popularity, originality, technicality, and/or historical importance.  Enjoy.

10. Arch Enemy

Arch Enemy is neither the first or the greatest band on this list but their influence is undeniable. Arguably the first death metal supergroup, Arch Enemy was formed in 1995 by members of Carcass, Carnage, Spiritual Beggars, Merciful Fate and Armageddon. Since their inception, the band has released eight studio albums, the latest of which, The Root of All Evil, which received favorable marks from fans and media alike.

Interesting Factoid: Most of you should already know this but Arch Enemy’s iconic singer, Angela Gossow, is not the band’s first. Carnage’s Johan Liiva was a founding member and performed vocals with the band until 2000.

9. Suffocation

Formed in 1989 in Long Island, New York, Suffocation paved the way for a long line of death metal bands to start experimenting with more elements of grind-core and increased technicality in their music. One of Suffocation’s trademarks, breakdowns, gave birth to a bastard, disfigured child I think most metal fans would rather have stayed locked up in the basement: boy bands with guitars deathcore.

8. Cannibal Corpse

This list would simply not be complete with out a nod to Cannibal Corpse.  Formed in 1988, this little band that could have released eleven studio albums, two of which sold over a million each, solidifying them as the top-selling death metal band of all time in the United States.

Cannibal Corpse are probably best known for their slasher inspired lyrics and raunchy album covers that have resulted in the band being banned in several countries and many record stores refusing to carry or display their albums

7. Entombed

What stared as a band pioneering Scandinavian death metal, turned to a band pioneering their own brand of a death metal and rock ‘n roll hybrid known now to some as Death ‘n Roll, Entombed has racked up nine studio albums, two live albums, and a hearty handful of demos and EPs since 1990.

Editor’s Album Recommendations: Left Hand Path, Clandestine, Wolverine Blues

6. Deicide

Formed in 1987, Deicide hold the records for the second and third best-selling death metal records in the United States (Self-titled and Legion, respectively), still tour the world playing sold out shows and plan to release their tenth studio album next year.

Good as Deicide is or was, many will agree things just aren't the same with out the Hoffman brothers’ axe team assault of the early albums. The brothers left -- less than amicably -- in 2004 because of royalty and publishing disputes.

5. Obituary

I’m sorry to say that I actually don’t know much about Obituary, but was told that if I didn’t include them on this list myself and all my seed would burn in false metal hell. So here. Obituary, formed in Tampa under the name Xecutioner in 1985 they, along with Death, are credited as being “one of the fundamental act’s in the the development of death metal.” As with most other band’s on this list, Obituary is still alive and kicking and they plan to release their ninth studio album sometime next year.

*I’m admitting my ignorance here, so if anyone wants to recommend me an album or two in the comments section, feel free.

4. Carcass

Arguably my favorite band on this list, Carcass was formed in 1985 and despite probably having more to do with the grindcore genre, we can all agree they belong on this list. With only recording five (so far) studio albums, Carcass has become one of the most ‘cited as an influence’ band in this and the grindcore genres.

Editor’s Album Recommendations:  Symphonies of Sickness, Heartwork, Swansong

3. Morbid Angel

Formed in, you guessed it, Tampa, Florida in 1984, Morbid Angel has become the third best-selling death metal band in the United States and still to this day holds claim as recording the best-selling death metal album, Covenant. Their influence on the scene is undeniable and though they haven’t released an album since 2003 (they have one planned for 2011) interest in this band remains high a they continue to tour and stay active in the community.

Morbid Angel’s success spawned from (in addition to their unmatched skill, technicality and general bad assery, of course) their being one of the first death metal band signed to a major label (Giant Records) and the appearance of one their music videos on the now iconic t.v. program: Beavis and Butt-head.

2. Possessed

Many will argue that Possessed is the first of the death metal bands, and I really couldn’t tell you for sure, but it is true that this band was formed in 1983 (as was Death) and had already broken up by the time most of the other bands on this list were in their infancy (1987).

Despite only releasing two full-length recordings, Possessed’s influence on this genre is so great you simply won’t find a death metal band not either directly or indirectly influenced by them, nor will you find a heavy metal message board on the net that hasn’t engaged, at some point or another, in an all out war amongst it’s members over Possessed place in death metal history. Where their place is, I cant really say but if Possessed created death metal, there was one band that took it to another level...

1. Death

Surprised? No, I didn’t think you would be. Over and over, no matter where you go, Death will make their merry way to the top of death metal ‘best of’ lists. Death is the top-selling death metal band in the world and is only topped by Cannibal Corpse in the US. Lead singer/guitarist Chuck Schuldiner (RIP) was affectionately known to metal fans everywhere as the Godfather of Death Metal and in his short time on this earth made seven full length records with Death, three with Voodoo Cult, two with Control Denied, and one solo. After putting Death aside to focus on Control Denied, Chuck was diagnosed with a brain tumor and passed away while recording their second record on December 31, 2001.

**Members of Death have gone on play with the likes of Cynic, Iced Earth, Sebastian Bach, Acheron, Deicide, Obituary, Six Feet Under, and Testament.

obituary, i would recommen slowly we rot, cause of death and world demise, but cause of death tops the three..carcass, getting more technical and death metal in their necroticism, but heartwork is death metal, swansong more power metal and thrash...sepultura's schizophrenia's a death metal album....as with kreator, when they started out...thanks.

Now make a list of current death metal greats. Many of these bands paved the way but it doesn't necessarily make them any good.

I can't believe you comprised a list of the top ten greatest death metal bands and you don't know who Obituary is. Seriously?
shayan_angelow's picture

I totally agree with SALLY
arch enemy is BEST death metal band and i think AG is one of the best vocalist in this genre
She really is a heroine and a reason for pride for many enthusiasts of this style
No one has the ability to sing like her and other woman vocalist can just imitate from AG

This list is pretty much on the money!

Genres ARE necessary though. It helps you to hone your tastes, find similar artists, and people to network with to grow your musical knowledge. Sometimes they get way out of hand "blackened-tech-death-blahblah" but for the most part they're good.
Anonymous's picture
yea...it is helpful in finding similar artists but you should not be confined to one genre there are some extraordinary acts in different genres so you should try them out....\m/
Anonymous's picture
i wasnt considering these bands in death metal....if you read it properly it's "my list of best METAL bands"....and even if the definitions and heaviness of music changes it dosent mean a thing.you people compare music with it's heaviness......."IT's not like heavier the music the better it is"........there are many artists who play softer but better music than the listed artists. So what i'am saying is stop dividing metal in different genres just listen to the shit you like and fuck the rest......PEACE.....metal forever\m/

hey J. Deathscript !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you forgot to mention SINEGY when talking about the band ARCH ENEMY! their bassist is ex-SINERGY bassist. just i wanted to add some info
Anonymous's picture
yeah i totally agree with ya! that's right! LED ZEPPELIN used to be considered a fuckin heavy thing in its own time, when guys used to listen to jazz and blues stuff. but now it's only a somehow (maybe) metal band in the past. so will happen to DEATH and POSSESSED and ....
Anonymous's picture
Wait a minute my pals. look! all the bands you've mentioned are great. bands like CHILDREN OF BODOM and ARCH ENEMY, LAMB OF GOD, PANTERA ,... they all are great... but not really it is fair to consider them DEATH METAL... although COB and ARCH ENEMY are my idols of all time... they're so talented and their music so sophisticated. I mean they have one of the world's best guitarists in them. but the fact is GENRE. DON'T FIGHT FRIENDS! you gotta think of what i say: "GENRE AND WHAT WE DEFINE A GENRE TO BE CHANGES OVER TIME! HEAVY METAL HAD A MUCH DIVERSE DEFINITION 20 OR 30 YEARS AGO THAN WHAT IT HAS NOW! SO IS FOR DEATH METAL!" you may call "ARCH ENEMY FUCKIN PURE DEATH METAL" or a guy may call "COB A RIPPIN TEAR BRINGING DEATH METAL BAND" but this is only what you define it to be. as we all progress in music, as our ears get used to some sounds and we think its time for something heavier and more brutal our definition of metal changes. (then you may call metallica which used to be your childhood hero and fuckin awesome heavy band, just a pile of meaningless shit). who knows???? maybe 10 years later we all will consider "DEATH" and "Chuck Schuldiner" only a heavy band! THINK of WHAT I said!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous's picture
LAMB OF GOD is the best band in the current metal scene...they have the best vocalist...chris adler is a excellent drummer and their guitarist is also good....also their lyrics are sensible...LAMB OF GOD \m/ forever

Ronald Addams's picture
You forgot Necrophagist, Decrepit Birth and Dying Fetus to be mentioned, my cousin likes The Black Dahlia murder, but duh!. that group is not death metal, is heavy metal, and death metal is a subgenre of heavy metal, so that must cover all the Heavy metal's subgenres, if you guys can't believe my words, in wikipedia there's further info about heavy metal bands, perhaps before you leave a comment, you must check your favorite musical group, if the info says "death metal", then nobody will laugh or even make fun of you about your comment, that's a real proof that americans most of them (or you if you're one of them) that are like Homer Simpson (by the way, I hate that moron, he really deserves to be tortured viewing the mexican tv programs, he either choose to hear one of these great bands or would hang himself, death to Homer Simpson, Britney Spears and his stupid sister Jamie Lynn Spears), Death Metal is the best music, the whole death metal bands are best than Moderatto (a mexican rock group, dyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaackkkkkkk! Death metal 4ever

Whoever said avenged seven fold is fuckin flaming fag. And you should probably kill yourself now. Lamb of god used to be good but not anymore, when they were burn the priest they were pretty cool. And cannibal corpse should be 2nd or 3rd. Also guttural secrete should be on there as well, along with paths of possession.
Anonymous's picture
Check out Slowly We Rot, Cause of Death, Th End Complete and World Demise by Obituary. Slowly We Rot and Cause Of Death probably being the best.
NoSleepAtAll's picture
Nothing wrong with Arch Enemy, but this list would be perfect with Bolt Thrower instead of AE. Everythin they released since '88 is high quality DM. And they has a female member too!

Enemy of the Sun's picture
Children of Bodom isn't even death metal. In Flames is terrible. Even The Jester Race was nothing more than decent. Amon Amarth is okay but they didn't do anything mindblowing. They just don't suck.
Anonymous's picture
hey man no COB in flames amon amarth????
Enemy of the Sun's picture
Wow. You guys have some very shitty suggestions. The thrash metal bands are well thrash metal bands. And over-rated ones at that. Some of them are just retarded. Dark Tranquillity is barely even death metal, although I respect their talent and influence. Six Feet Under is an embarrassment. At least nobody has said Slipknot yet... although there was mention of Korn... you sir are a dolt. Below is a list of undisputedly epic, real, original death metal bands that could all have potential for this top ten. I encourage you all to take a look at it. -Autopsy -Atheist -Death -Cynic -Entombed -Nihilist -Suffocation -Cryptopsy (Unspoken King sucks, I know, but their early work is undeniably classic) -Dismember -Obituary -Morbid Angel -Behemoth -Bolt Thrower -Darkthrone? Soulside Journey was incredible. -Immolation -Incantation -Vader -Gorguts -Malevolent Creation -Pestilence -Therion (early work) -Carcass Sorry, but bands like Cannibal Corpse, In Flames, Lamb of God, Nile, Dying Fetus, Arch Enemy, Children of Bodom, and most of the other mentioned bands don't stand on the same level as the ones above. Whose going to argue with me? Whose going to be the idiot to tell me that Disturbed and Korn are better death metal bands than Pestilence and Dismember...
adriunna's picture
i relli adreee dude
StupidPosers's picture
Clearly people have false perceptions of "Death Metal". Fuck sakes MEGADETH IS NOT DEATH METAL REGARDLESS OF THE "DETH". The guy who was knocking Pantera is a blatantly obvious retard. They have some of the greatest riffs and sold more albums than any Death Metal band, that doesn't make them better than DM, but holy shit. I love this genre. I'd include Malevolent Creation and Nile however.

your list is missing opeth and nile
