Darkest Hour has been around since 1995 and has even release an album earlier this year called The Eternal Return.  jDeathscript posted a Review to the album if you want to check that out - The Eternal Return Review.  But sometimes is good to go back and check their transition to who they are today.  So lets jump back a couple of years to 2005 to an album entitled Undoing Ruin and a song called Convalescence.

Noumena - A Day to Depart | Call-Out

Artist/performer

Noumena
From: Finland

Discography: “Pride/Fall” (2001), “Absence” (2005), “Anatomy of Life” (2006)   Noumena is a melodic death metal band that takes its name from the philosophical term “noumenon”. They have been active since 1998 and in 2004, after various demos and EPs they were signed to Spikefarm Records. The band consists of the following five members:   Antti H. - vocals Tuukka T. - guitar Ville L.- guitar Hannu S. - bass Llkka U. - drums   Noumena are able to brilliantly meld the sounds of melodic-death metal with an old school Scandinavian and ‘80’s metal feel. Their 2006 album, “Anatomy of Life”, is that last we have heard from this band in a while- but I am keeping my fingers crossed for another album or two. Defiantly check out Noumena if you are a fan of Insomnium, or Dark Lunacy.   Links: www.myspace.com/noumena

Sentenced - We Are But Falling Leaves | Call-Out

Band/Orchestra
Sentenced From: Finland   Discography: “Shadows of the Past” (1991), “North from Here” (1993), “Amok” (1995), “Down” (1996), “Frozen” (1998), “Crimson” (2000), “The Cold White Light” (2002), “The Funeral Album” (2005)   Sentenced was a doom metal band formed in 1989 and primarily played death metal until 1995’s “Amok”, which ushered in the bands gradual change in style. In 2005, Sentenced recorded what would be their farewell album “The Funeral Album”. A few years later in 2009, guitarist and founding member Miika Tenkula passed away from a heart attack- ending many peoples hope of a reunion.   Sentenced is missed by fans worldwide. If you haven’t already, go out and buy a few albums- I think you will find each offers something different and meaningful. Fans of Amorphis and Insomnium will appreciate Sentenced. Rest in Peace Miika Tenkula.   Links: www.myspace.com/sentencedband

Nocte Obducta - Anis (Desîhras Tagebuch - Kapitel I)

Cover (front)

Though I have neglected to write about this German black metal outfit, Nocte Obducta’s albums Naktar: Teil 1 and 2 have been getting regular spins from me for sometime now. As a band, Nocte Obducta took a somewhat experimental approach to black metal, focusing on melody and technicality in lieu of traditional minimalism.

Born as Desihra, Nocte Obducta released their first full-length album in 1999 and six more since then. Much of the lyrical content of the band is rooted in traditional German poetry, nature and to some extent depression. In 2006 the band announced their split but released an album in 2008, mostly containing previously recorded drums and guitars. Nocte Obucta has, without ideology or prejudice, revolutionized black-metal- solidifying it once again, as many of the greats have before, an indefinable art medium.

After A Long Day...|| Equilibrium - Wingthors Hammer

Cover (front)
Today is a day not unlike many others. We had a new video from the Deftones and new video from Slayer... not. Also an announcement from the fantastic Equilibrium, and to top it all off an analysis of recording albums in the hot desert regions of West Texas. As I have been listening to old Equillibrium all day in the wake of their announcement, I think the track ‘Wingthors Hammer’ from their 2005 album ‘Turis Fratyr’ ought to be the soundtrack of this wrap-up of the days events.

P.S. New NSFW Slayer video should be up tomorrow.

As The Day Breaks... || Gehenna - Grenade Prayer

Cover (front)
Good day merry gentlemen and ladies alike.  We’ve got a lot of cool stuff for you today including (should my general lack of enthusiasm pass) another installment of ‘If You Like That, Try This‘ and some news about Nile.  I thought I would start the day off today with a track from a band I discovered just this morning, Gehenna.  Gehenna is one of the many, many bands that were formed in 1993 in Norway.  Since then they’ve recorded six full-length albums and numerous demos and EPs.  While the band’s page lists them as active, they have not recorded and album since 2005’s ‘WW’, from which the song above is taken.

As I have not heard any material other than ‘WW’ I can’t really speak for the rest of the band’s catalogue, but ‘WW’ is a haunting yet accessible piece of black metal art.  Despite featuring one of my least favorite black metal musicians (Frost) on drums, the entire album is incredibly well written and delivered, with riffs reminiscent of early classics in the genre, sickeningly quick blast beats and impressive, raw vocals that simply will not quit.  The tracks on the album itself shift and pitch from devastatingly fast to simple, fuzzy drones that contribute to this albums overall bleak atmosphere.  But don’t take my word for it..

If You Like That, Try This || Morgart - Sinfonie 5 - In A-Dur

Cover (front)
It’s been almost a month since our last installment of this editorial where I suggested Limbonic Art to fans of (early) Dimmu Borgir.  I’ve thought long and hard about to whom I could compare to whom this time around, and ultimately decided to descend the abyss a little further to suggest a band to those of you who enjoyed Limbonic Art, but wanted something perhaps even more obscure.  If this is you, give the band Morgart an honest listen.

Morgart is a Swiss band that formed in 1995 under the name Forsth, later changing their name in 1999 to what they are known as now.  The track above is from the band’s first album released under their name Morgart in 2005, ‘Die Schlacht (In Acht Sinfonien)’.  The album is a concept based on a diary the band found of a monk written in 1315, recalling his experience with the famous Swiss battle of Morgarten.  The album is broken down into eight symphonies or ‘sinfonie’ with the names of the tracks distinguished by a number and in some cases, a few words.  The songs are extremely synth heavy, aptly titled as symphonies, with light vocals and, at times, almost indistinguishable guitars.

Have a listen to the track ‘Sinfonie 5- In A-Dur’ by pressing play above and leave us your thoughts in the comment section

Album Of The Day || The Number 12 Looks Like You- Sad. Nuclear. Sad

Cover (front)

Feeling tired? Bad case of the Mondays? If the coffee is not cutting it this morning there is meth, but if you wish to forgo all those pesky side effects but retain the jittery sense of alertness you can always just pop in a CD from The Number 12 Looks Like You.

This band’s frantic and furious tempos that pitch and shift the listener through a multitude of sonic spheres in seemingly a matter of moments are enough to jump start and leave even the most docile of folk frazzled. My favorite album from this young band was one of their earliest works, Sad. Nuclear. Sad., which retained some melody whilst still subjecting the listener to the aforementioned highly caffeinated lashings. Sadly The Number 12 now looks defunct but that won’t stop us from naming Sad. Nuclear. Sad.  the album of the day. Above you can listen to the track The Devils Dick Diaster and below you can share your opinion.
